When I first began listening to music, I
listened to 45's. Then as I began to diversify my musical tastes in high
school, I began buying and listening to albums. At college, 45's still
ruled the day on the jukebox, however most of us listened to albums in
our dorm and frat house rooms. During my senior year of college, a good
friend's girlfriend (now wife) looked at my album collection and said,
"I could never be with you, as I would never be as important to you as
the music".

Then the 80's arrived and the CD. I first
started buying CD's in special gift boutiques as most music stores had
not committed floor space to the format. In my opinion, this was how
Windham Hill records came to fame, selling CDs in gift shops - they were
way before their time. I also began subscribing to the CD Review which I
read cover to cover each month and bought many CD's based on their
reviews. It used to amaze me when I would go to my local tower ask for a
particular CD (with good reviews), to be told we sold out. Cannot
believe you are the 6th person today asking for that particular CD. And
while the dept. manager stood there telling me this, I am looking at the
bin of CD reviews on sale at his elbow.
Then the new millennium and for me the SACD,
however that format just did not have legs. However, some of my favorite
listening is to my SACD collection - the sound just does not get
any better.
And now we have Itunes and beginning of
digital downloading. I must say that I love Itunes - the absolute best
store for a music junkie. I find obscure tracks, artists and albums on
Itunes that I would never have found at physical inventory record or
book store. Plus, I can listen to snippets of everything before I
purchase and I do not have to buy the entire album. Although, there are
some artists who I love that I still just purchase the album rather than
tracks. A lot of times, I will buy a couple of tracks by a new to me
artist and after listening to these tracks for a week or so, I go back
and buy the entire album or albums or a lot of tracks.
I buy all my Itune tracks in AAC as I feel
that version gives me a good mix of good sound coupled with not so fat
files. I listen to the IPod in the car, on a plane on the beach, on my
sofa reading in the upstairs extra room. And in my two main rooms, I
listen to my Itunes songs, albums, playlists on my IMAC G5. Upstairs, I
do this via Apple TV and the remote app that is on my IPhone - amazing.
So welcome to my world of music.
